How Production Companies Back Up Data

BACK-UP Your DATA

Watch this quick video tutorial here!

Hey everybody, Austin here with Partners in Post. And I am here to talk to you about backing up your files. It's been said that if you don't have at least two backups of every file, you don't have any files at all. So that's something to think about! But while you're thinking about that, I want to tell you how we back up our data. Behind me I have over 150 terabytes of footage and you know, that's a lot of files to keep track of. So when you're trying to come up with a process to keep your client's data safe, there's a lot you need to think about. And a big part of that is what software programs you'll use to guarantee that everything has been transferred.

Using Carbon Copy Cloner

We use a program called Carbon Copy Cloner, and you can buy this online. It's not too expensive and it's very easy to use. I set up a little demo here to show you how easy it really is. So the first thing you do is select your source, then choose a destination folder in this case we often choose our server or an external drive, which we store off-sites. We also have an online backup, which I do recommend. But that is not a part of this blog. So you basically select your source, select your destination, and hit clone. It's as simple as that, now you look at folder A and B, they look identical. And what's really nice about this is if it gets interrupted halfway, let's say we add more files to folder A that are big files of an extra 200 GB's. You just go back and run the same task and it'll look through to see what's been copied and what is left to copy. And when you look at folder B, they look exactly the same. It didn't copy over everything twice. It has the exact same folder structure. So this is the best way to make sure that your data is safe, secure, and ready to go.

So happy editing! If you have any questions, give us a call and please, back up that data.
